England will be hoping to edge nearer a first Six Nations Grand Slam since 2003 when they play host to Italy at Twickenham on Sunday.

Head to Head

  • All-time record: Played 18: England won 18, Italy won 0, drawn 0
  • Biggest winning margins: Eng: 60 (67-7 at Twickenham, 1999) Ita: N/A

  • Most tries in a Test: Eng: 4 Chris Ashton (at Twickenham, 2011); Ita: 21 players on one
Stuart Lancaster’s side have swept all before them in this year’s championship with Scotland, Ireland and France all put to the sword with a mix of power, pace and precision.
England will enter the game as clear favourites having never lost to the Italians and dominated them at Twickenham – winning their most recent encounter at HQ by 46 points. But the Azzurri pushed England all the way in Rome last year and their stunning victoryover France last month underlined the fact that at their best they are a threat to all their Six Nations rivals. But unfortunately they have failed to back that impressive showing up with Scotland and then Wales bringing them crashing back down to earth.
The odds are stacked heavily in England’s favour but they will be wary of writing off their rivals who received a major boost earlier this week when captain Sergio Parisse won an appeal against a recent ban that cleared him for action.
England – Player to Watch: Some would have you believe that Chris Ashton does not deserve a place in the current England side but can he recapture the kind of form that saw him claim four tries the last time Italy visited Twickenham.
England – Team News: Saracens prop Mako Vunipola is handed his first start in the place of Joe Marler while Tom Youngs returns at hooker with Dylan Hartley making way. Toby Flood reclaims the No.10 shirt with Owen Farrell yet to recover from a thigh injury he suffered against France. Flood will partner Danny Care who gets the nod over Ben Youngs at scrum-half with James Haskell preferred at blindside flanker instead of Courtney Lawes in the other change to the starting line-up. A fit-again Freddie Burns will provide fly-half cover on the bench and joining him among the replacements is Tom Croft who returns to the England fold 11 months after a broken neck almost left him paralysed.
Italy- Player to Watch: Italy captain Sergio Parisse is more used to picking up Man of the Match awards rather than suspensions so expect him to do all he can he hits the headlines for the right reasons following this game.
Italy – Team News: Sergio Parisse returns from suspension at No.8 and reclaims the captaincy with Manoa Vosawai making way in one of five changes to the pack that started the defeat to Wales last month. Roberto Barbieri starts at blindside ahead Alessandro Zanni while Quentin Geldenhuys and Joshua Furno form a new second row pairing with Antonio Pavanello and Francesco Minto dropping to the bench. In the final change up front, Alberto De Marchi is preferred to veteran Andrea Lo Cicero. Luciano Orquera returns to the No.10 shirt with Kris Burton omitted while Gonzalo Garcia comes into the midfield with Gonzalo Canale moving to outside centre and Tommaso Benvenuti named among the replacement.
Key Battle: Italy’s formidable pack took a bit of a hammering at the hands of Wales and the referee last time out and will no doubt be determined to reassert themselves with a strong showing at Twickenham – but this England pack are made of equally impressive stuff and have no reason to fear anyone. Their battle will be bruising and enthralling and will go a long way to deciding the contest.

France are reeling from three straight championship defeats with Italy, Wales and England all having got the better of them in recent weeks. As a result they are on course for their first wooden spoon since 1999, first win-less campaign since 1969 and first whitewash since 1957.

Ireland began the championship in sparkling form with a victory over Wales in their opener but they have failed to hit those heights since with both England and more recently Scotland getting the better of them.

Both sides have shown only glimpses of their best form and their lack of consistency leaves them amongst the also-rans in this year's Six Nations. The respective coaches - Ireland's Declan Kidney and France's Philippe Saint-Andre - are feeling the heat and their long-term futures and the players' desire to right some wrongs ensure there is still plenty to play for.

Ireland - Player to Watch: Cian Healy returns from suspension needing a big performance to rescue his reputation and keep his British & Irish Lions hopes alive.

Ireland - Team News: Ireland make three changes to the side that fell to Scotland last month with Healy returning at the expense of Tom Court, winger Fergus McFadden stepping in for the injured Craig Gilroy and lock Mike McCarthy getting the nod over Donncha O'Callaghan. Paddy Jackson has shaken off a minor hamstring injury to retain the No.10 shirt with Ian Madigan set to provide cover on the bench with veteran Rona O'Gara omitted from the squad. Munster prop Stephen Archer and Leinster lock Devin Toner are also drafted onto the bench.

France - Player to Watch: Wesley Fofana claimed a superb score against England last month with his pace and dazzling feet too much for the England defence - will he be able to slice his way through the Ireland defence in similar fashion?

France - Team News: France have made three changes to their starting line-up including a surprise recall for fly-half Frederic Michalak. The Toulon scrum-half is handed the No.10 jersey ahead of Francois Trinh-Duc despite failing to impress off the bench during his side's 23-13 defeat to England last time out. Winger Maxime Medard is also set to make his first Test appearance for over a year having battled back from a knee injury with Benjamin Fall missing out altogether. Elsewhere, Florian Fritz is preferred at outside centre with Mathieu Bastareaud dropping to the bench.

Key Battle: Ireland captain Jamie Heaslip has been the subject of widespread criticism of late and will be keen to silence his doubters - but in French counterpart Louis Picamoles he faces once of the giants of European rugby. Which player will dominate the game and the headlines?

England may currently lead the chase for the northern hemisphere crown and an elusive Grand Slam but both these sides can still pip them to the glory if results go their way - starting with their latest showdown. Hosts Scotland have defied the doomsayers by bouncing back from an opening defeat to England to notch victories over Italy and then Ireland. Wales also stumbled at the first hurdle against Ireland but got their campaign back on track with wins against France and then Italy.

As a result, the stage is set for another thrilling encounter but the weight of history appears to be against Scotland with Wales having won their last five meetings - most notably a breath-taking affair in Cardiff in 2010 that was settled by a last-minute score by Welsh wing wizard Shane Williams.

Scotland - Player to Watch: Fullback Stuart Hogg may have attempted to play down his Lions hopes but another eye-catching display will surely cement his place on the plane.

Scotland - Team News: Fly-half Duncan Weir is handed his first Scotland start and replaces club-mate Ruaridh Jackson. They have also opted to reinstate Euan Murray at tight-head while back-row Ryan Wilson could make his debut from the bench having been drafted onto the bench in the place of the injured David Denton.

Wales - Player to Watch: Sam Warburton began the Six Nations with the Wales captaincy and high hopes of touring with the British & Irish Lions but has since been stripped of both. Can he rescue his campaign with a strong showing?

Wales - Team News: Warburton returns to the side at openside in one of three changes from the team that beat Italy but Ryan Jones retains the captaincy. Lock Alun-Wyn Jones is also handed a recall at the expense of Andrew Coombs. In the front-row, Paul James starts in place of Gethin Jenkins who has failed to recover from a calf injury he sustained against the Azzurri.

Key Battle: The showdown between rival fullbacks Stuart Hogg and Leigh Halfpenny may be worth the price of admission alone. Both have been in outstanding form but only one can wear the No.15 shirt for the British & Irish Lions later this year.
